Today I visited the Albarellos Dam. Nothing remarkable really compared to other dams , but remarkable enough it makes me want to study civil engineering rather than mechanical engineering .
Internet points for guessing the car.
This thing was built in 1971, it’s 200m across and 90m tall. I love it; so imposing and powerful. On one side a messy drain, on the other a calm lake.
What I really want to do is build something on the far end. A museum, a house, something. It’s befitting. However, I doubt this would be doable since the far end houses the emergency drain, which in reality isn’t that large. but accommodations could be made for my crazy dream.

When doing the Oklahoma Adventure Trail, a couple of the dams we visited had these... things. No idea what it is for, but would make an awesome house. I t even has a 6-12 car garage, as long as you’re cool with your cars being under water from time to time.

It must be where Bond villains live during the summer. So sinister.
I’ll be returning to the dam soon.

The CE program at my school always sounded boring until I heard they had a yearly contest making concrete canoes. Wasn’t enough to make me change majors though.

Concrete canoes?
That sounds fascinating....
I don’t know. I’m just amazed by structures like these. It’s also the first time I’ve gone to the damn, despite swimming multiple times throughout my life in the lake it creates.

Dam design would be more structural than civil, but a civil could do it. For me concrete is pretty boring. It’s like make it 12" thick and do two mats of #4 at 12" OC. Civil is more fun if you get into water treatment or some other specialty
. Transportation is soooo boring.

Really? I find traffic engineering absolutely fascinating. Come to think of it, you’ re probably right on the dam design being more on the hands of structural engineers . Here’s a cross section of the dam.
I’m really just running the course, in my college all engineers train the same for the first two years, the last two they get enthralled in their specializations. Maybe in a couple of semester’s I’ll have my interests more clear.

That structure is a water intake, but it appears to be out of the wat
er. Water should go into the base then through a pipe maybe through a generator then back into the river.

I started out as a civil engineer, but after realizing it wasn’t the right fit for me, trying to “ stick it out” , and finally changing majors after 3 years, I ended up with a BFA in graphic design and now I have a really good job doing software support & mapping at a small oil company . ¯\_()_/¯
You’ll figure it out in time!

Yep, concrete canoes.
